The 10 best sample flips, according to Jaisu
Dummy and Astral Black are taking over The Bussey Building in Peckham, South London this Friday (June 5th), the second in a series of late night parties presented alongside labels we love. Entry is free – you just need to RSVP by emailing names to rsvp@dummymag.com – so there's no excuse not to be there.
Pretty much the whole Astral Black family will be present on the night: label boss Jon Phonics, regulars like DJ Milktray and Jaisu, residents like Bushido, newcomers like Drae Da Skimask, and other friends and associates will all be representing the Glasgow-based club/hip hop/rap/grime/beats/everything-in-between label.
Astral Black recently put out the debut long player from rather excellent Edinburgh beatmaker Jaisu – fittingly titled 'A Long Player'. Watching Jaisu work samples and hammer an MPC is a wonder to behold, so we thought we'd ask what he rates as the best sample flips out there. His selection covers Dilla, Just Blaze, and the collagist work of Moodymann.

Sample of: Patrice Rushen Forget Me Nots
Jaisu: "Will Smith murdered this classic, but not really in a good way. George Michael too, for Fastlove."
Sample of: Patrice Rushen Remind Me
Jaisu: "A simple half-bar loop, but the way that Dilla freaks the bassline and sprinkles it with other sounds from the OG is amazing."
Sample of: Thomas Bangalter Extra Dry
Jaisu: "Slowed all the way down, anything goes."
Sample of: The Isley Brothers Footsteps In The Dark
Jaisu: "One of my favourite Dilla beats using two records at once. One for drums and vocals, one for synths. He makes it sound easy."
Sample of: Ennio Morricone Sporco Ma Distinto
Jaisu: "One of my favourite DJ Premier beats. The way he freaked the original had a big influence on me in terms of manipulating the rhythm of a sample."
Sample of: TLC Diggin On You (Live Version)
Jaisu: "Listen to the original. Enough said."
Sample of: Rick James Superfreak
Jaisu: "Listen to the original. Now listen to U Can't Touch This."
Sample of: Supertramp Crime Of The Century
Jaisu: "Another era-defining banger from Just Blaze. S-Type and I used to trip out over the surgical way in which the original was utilised."
Sample of: The Commodores The Assembly Line
Jaisu: "Some of my favourite drums – Paul C managed to mangle the chant into some ghostly air."
Sample of: Idris Muhammad Turn This Mutha Out
Jaisu: "A small piece of a crazy collage of samples. Blink and you'll miss it."
Jaisu plays Dummy x Astral Black at The Bussey Building in Peckham, London on June 5th 2015 (RSVP for free entry).
