The 11 best jungle tracks from the 90s, according to Lee Gamble
Ahead of the release of Lee Gamble’s ‘Diversions 1994-1996’ EP on PAN, which consists entirely of samples from his collection of jungle cassette mixtapes, the British producer and a founding member of the London-via-Birmingham CYRK collective talks us through 11 of the best jungle tracks from the '90s.
In Lee's own words:
"I have an EP out soon which samples and re-works aspects of the jungle/ drum & bass sound around 1994-1996. With that in mind, I have tried to choose tracks from this period.
It’s difficult to choose just 10 as there was an overabundance of interesting and diverse music at this time. One of the things that drew me to this music as a teenager was its innovation with different sounds, samples etc; how it could shift moods within minutes. There were sounds which were left over from the earlier rave scene (disembodied vocals, euphoric chord etc) alongside newer aspects of ragga, soul, jazz, techno. Fundamentally, it was a music of samples. It could be ecstatic at times, and then darker, moody, paranoid and introspective, all within in one track. It was also all these things in the raves too.
Anyhow, a lot has been said about this music and era, I have just tried to supply 11 tracks which highlight the various aspects which intrigued me then and now. The tracks below range from 1992-1997 and appear in chronological order."
- Wots My Code – Dubplate (Original mix) (1992 )
- Studio 2 – Who Jah Bless? (1993)
- Subnation – Scottie (1993)
- DJ Crystl – Warp Drive (1993)
- Dillinja – Warrior (1994)
- DJ Dextrous & Rude Boy Keith – Wicked (Remix) (1994)
- Photek – Rings Around Saturn (1995)
- Source Direct – Snake Style (1995)
- Manix – Turn Away Skull Special (Tek 9 remix) (1995)
