60 minutes of overlooked Japanese new wave, 1970-1990

Chee Shimizu is a pivotal figure in the Japanese dance music scene, having been behind the Discossession and Sci-Fi parties as well as contributing to Kenji Takimi’s excellent Crue-L records under the Discossession alias, one that fans of house and disco on the deeper end of the spectrum should check out.

Shimizu has contributed over 100 records to Late Night Chameleon Cafe consisting, rather interestingly, of overlooked Japanese artists from the 1970s to the 1990s. The Eastern contribution to leftfield electronica and experimentalism tends to get overlooked in our music history narratives, so it’s definitely an eye-opening venture. You can listen to a mix containing only the artists from those records on the stream below, or on the LNCC website and you can buy some of them if you’re interested.
