Berghain is opening to the public as an art gallery

Attendees can bypass the strict door policy to explore the 3500 sq m of nightclub space, including its notorious darkrooms

Berlin’s infamous Berghain nightclub is being transformed into an art gallery during the coronavirus pandemic.

Launching in the midst of the annual Berlin Art Week, the venue will showcase the works of 80 contemporary artists, including the likes of Olafur Eliasson, Cyprien Gaillard, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rosemarie Trockel, and Isa Genzken.

The revamp will allow ordinary members of the public to rarely bypass the venue’s tough door policy, which is famous across the globe for its unpredictable and inscrutable nature. Attendees will be able to explore the 3500 sq.m of nightclub space, including its notorious darkrooms, via a series of guided tours.

Organised in collaboration with art collector Christian Boros, ‘Studio Berlin’ will be part of the German capital’s effort to keep its cultural pulse alive despite the current global circumstances.

Speaking to the Art Newspaper, Boros said: “For the first time, even grandmas with zimmer frames and children will be able to get in”.

“For three months during the confinement period we were speaking to artists on the phone every day. We wanted to show this incredible artistic production. Berlin was frozen, so why not think differently? Why not work together?” he added.
