DJ Screw's record collection donated to the University of Houston

The chopped-and-screwed godfather's record collection has been acquired by The University of Houston and will be on display to the public next year.

The University of Houston Libraries yesterday announced the DJ Screw Sound Recordings Collection. In an attempt to preserve the contributions of the late DJ Screw, the originator of the ‘chopped and screwed’ genre that helped define the Houston hip hop sound, the University of Houston have acquired his record collection. This collection includes over 1000 vinyl records owned by DJ Screw, mostly donated by his father, Robert Earl Davis Sr., and will be open for researchers’ use in 2013 after the slabs of black wax have been catalogued. Among these records are rare 12“s by Houston, Southern and West Coast artists that were the foundation of DJ Screw’s highly seminal, self-produced, slow-mo ‘screw tapes’.

Highlights of the collection will be featured on display at the M.D. Anderson Library as part of the forthcoming exhibit ‘DJ Screw and the Rise of Houston Hip Hop’, which will take place from the 19th March – 21st September 2012.
