Is the new Boards of Canada album on its way?

BoC have set up an international puzzle centred around six mysterious records that seems to suggest a new album is on the way.

Boards Of Canada suggested that a new album was on the way just over a year ago, but it would seem that the pre-release campaign has begun in earnest – and, fittingly for BoC, in a very oblique fashion.

As 2020k point out, yesterday saw a handful of BoC vinyls appear in record shops unannounced, tying in with the Record Store Day celebrations.

The news first came from a New York-based Reddit user who bought a copy from Other Music (the shop claimed they received the record in their shipment without any word or acknowledgement). The vinyl contains 20 seconds of audio, in which a six digit number is said once before cutting out.

It’s not known how many of these records made it out into the world, but the artwork suggests that it is one of six similar records that form a puzzle. If the other five records are found and arranged in the right order, the Reddit user believes, then more information or a code might be revealed.

2020k will be updating the page and their Twitter feed whenever more information will be revealed, and those commenting on the article are offering their takes on what the code means. Some note that it’s the hex code for turquoise, some think the release date. “Maybe it has something to do with the music? Key? Chords? Intervals? Beats?”, says one user.

It’d be the first BoC album since 2005’s ‘The Campfire Headphase’. 2013 certainly has been the year of the comeback – if this is a new album, then BoC will be joining the company of Justin Timberlake, David Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, Daft Punk, the original Sugababes…

UPDATE: the second vinyl appears to have been found, at Rough Trade East on Brick Lane, according to their Twitter. Isn’t this fun?
