On Friday night, Mala was in for a (probably overdue) turn in the Essential Mix hotseat. Frequently a hotbed for exclusives and track premieres, Mala’s two-hour mix was no exception, featuring a play for James Blake’s much anticipated take on Mala’s Changes – having previously only surfaced in live videos in questionable camera phone quality. First released on Deep Medi in 2007, the murky spaciousness of James’ remix feels in line with his previous Harmonimix output, and builds elegantly around that faceless vocal loop.
