Young Fathers win the Mercury Prize 2014!

The Edinburgh trio take home the gong and the £20,000 prize for their album 'Dead'.

Young Fathers have taken home this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize for their album 'Dead'.

A worthy winner, if an unexpected one, the Edinburgh trio fought off bookies favourites FKA twigs and Big Dada labelmate Kate Tempest for the gong. Besides taking home the prize, they also nab a healthy £20,000, as well as an inevitable boost in album sales, live show fees, respect and admiration, yadda yadda. One of them might even be offered a spot on Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

No, it's fun to take potshots at the Mercuries, but 'Dead' is a really good album and deserves to win. It was on our own alternative Mercury shortlist – a sure sign that they were a deserving winner if we ever saw one.
