Live broadcast: Awesome Tapes From Africa live at 285 Kent, Brooklyn

The fun-filled sweatbox that is 285 Kent in Williamsburg, Brooklyn came alive to the C90 sounds of Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa this past Saturday. His name is fairly self-explanatory and stems from when Shimkovitz lived in Ghana, and spent a lot of time at second-hand shops buying local music on cassettes. He started a blog and record label, also by the same name, to get the West African music that he was so passionate about out to a wider audience. When he DJed on Saturday, he cued and mixed cassette tapes off handheld recorders and old stereo units; neither a normal nor easy thing to do. What ensued was a festive dance party full of rarities and a storming Fela Kuti closer, all while the house sound engineer lovingly EQed each tape to make sure the sound was as pristine as its medium allowed it to be.
