Live broadcast: Xeno & Oaklander live at Public Assembly, Brooklyn

Summer has hit Brooklyn, but Xeno & Oaklander’s frigid brand of synth-pop kept things icy and robotic this past Friday at Williamsburg’s Public Assembly venue. The industrial decor, with only a handful of votive candles to light the sides of the stage, was a the perfect match for the duo luring us into their mechanical universe of disconnect and reverb-soaked longing. The drool-worthy aresenal of vintage analogue synthesiser and step sequencers practically dwarfed Sean McBride and Liz Wendelbo as they moved between the machines with complete expertise, setting off new and meticulously crafted sounds that constantly ebbed and flowed throughout their performance. Their intense concentration was palpable, and there were a few moments when Liz altogether lost herself in the music; arms outstretched and long hair swishing as she danced with abandon.
