Dummy Mix 55 // Sampha

Sampha has been making music from his base in Morden, South London, for upwards of five years now. He started playing piano at a young age and was exposed to a lot of music ranging from Steview Wonder to the UK Garage master, Todd Edwards. All these different styles came together in his productions and by 2009 Sampha was playing at Young Turks’ nights and remixing for muscians such as The xx and Laurel Collective. His most recent release on Young Turks, the Sundanza EP, came out in October. We asked Sampha to put together a mix – enjoy!

How’s it going?

It’s going somewhere i think. I’ve been good. I’ve just been writing making music as usual really. I went for a jog today which is rare though.

What’s coming up for you over the next few months?

Just writing getting music ready for next year. Starting to work on my live show a bit more. Hopefully will have some solo releases
next year, no dates as yet.

Please tell us a bit about the mix

This mix is just made of music that’s got to me at various periods of my life and also some of my favorite tunes I’ve discovered this year. Also there’s a few tunes of my own in there. It’s a bit all over the place at times twist and turns here and there i guess.

Who are a couple of your all-time favourite vocalists?

To name a few in no particular order people like Monique Bingham, Ella Fitzgerlad, Pharrell Willams, Fiona Apple D’angelo (the guy just speaks in harmony) and Stevie Wonder to name a few.

What other artists/promoters/parties in London are really exciting you at the moment?

Hmm well there’s so much going on sometimes i find it hard to keep up really. I’m really into this singer called Ebru who’s got the most amazing voice and Jessie Ware also.

Also what’s your next release and when are you playing next in London?

Well i’ve got a an ep out now called Sundanza which Young Turks have helped me get out there and am putting together songs that will hopefully surface in the year coming. I’m not playing in London for a little while i think, i might have one live show before the year leaves but I’m not sure yet. Just going to be reworking my live show for a bit.

Sampha plays live at Off Modern on Dec 4th and Fabric on January 7th
