Britney Spears asks judge to remove her father permanently as conservator
Britney Spears’ lawyer has formally asked for her father to be permanently removed from her current conservatorship arrangement.
A temporary conservator, care professional Jodi Montgomery, was appointed in 2019 after her father Jamie Spears stepped down due to health issues, and Spears is now requesting that Montgomery be made permanent.
Following her public breakdown in 2008, the singer’s life has been controlled by a court-ordered conservatorship whereby her father oversees her personal and business affairs.
The pop star’s conservatorship has been a much-discussed topic lately, and the subject of recent Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears.
Spears has previously attempted to remove her father from controlling her personal and business affairs, although a Los Angeles court ruled not to make changes to her 12-year conservatorship in August last year.
Although her father is not currently acting as his daughter’s personal conservator, Jamie Spears remains a co-conservator of his daughter’s finances, and oversees her estimated $60m (£43.8m) estate.
Variety reports that Britney Spears’ next court hearing about her conservatorship will take place on 27 April.
A former estate manager of Britney Spears had previously claimed that the star could remain in her conservatorship for the rest of her life, and accused the #FreeBritney campaign of pushing a damaging agenda which is complicating matters further.
