When I recently chatted to Disclosure for an upcoming Dummy feature, they told me that they found the sample for their searing album opener When A Fire Starts To Burn by typing “motivational speaker Harlem” into iTunes. They wanted to work with a rapper, they said, but in lieu of that coming together, they found some impassioned male speech with a cool voice and chopped it up all over their ridiculously fun beats. Harking back to the vocal-less throb of their earlier tracks like Tenderly and Flow, When A Fire Starts To Burn is a powerful statement of intent at the beginning of an album full of both club-indebted cuts and pop smashes. It’s got a subtle and smart catchiness, it makes you want to dance, and it opens an album that will doubtlessly be inescapable this summer. Stream it below.
