Odd Future sign to Sony, kind of

Rap band you may have heard of called "Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All" ink distribution deal with Sony RED, management promise a lack of "cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works".

We’re getting reports (read: we saw on the internet) that 11-member LA rap group Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All have signed a deal with Sony RED for what is probably quite a lot of money. That this is a distribution-only contract rather than a full record deal means that the band’s claim that this keeps “100% creative control” is actually fairly credible.

The band’s manager Chris Clancy said “It’s based on getting the distribution deal we’ve always envisioned that allows the group to ‘sign themselves’ to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art and release schedule with no third party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that it’s in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There’s no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works. It’s about to be fun… and different.”

So, basically, Odd Future will keep on making records by themselves and Sony will put them out into the world. There are currently four mixtapes and eight studio albums available by the collective which includes The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Frank Ocean, Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy Beats, all available through their website.

In other Odd Future news (and there is always other Odd Future news), Tyler, The Creator and the rest will be playing London’s Village Underground on Friday, with XL Recordings releasing his album, ‘Goblin’, next month.

Sony RED will distribute all future Odd Future albums. XL will release Tyler, The Creator’s album ‘Goblin’ on the 10th May, 2011
