Owiny Sigoma Band - Harpoon Land (Jesse Hackett's Funeral Suite Re-Version)

The oddball producer takes an incredibly happy summer jam and makes it incredibly dour - in a good way.

Jesse Hackett has a formidable talent for making formidable pop music; as half of Blludd Relations with Bullion he makes jaunty pop songs as seen through a sickly, nightmarish kaleidoscope, and in the position of remixer he often turns in deliriously weird and evocative re-imaginings of tracks. In this instance, he's taken Owiny Sigoma Band's – the Brownswood-signed, Afrobeat-influenced band he is a member of – summer stormer Harpoon Land and stretched its steamy, intricately percussive essence out into something much colder, slower and more deadpan. He describes it on Twitter as his "gothic folk funeral remix", which is pretty apt; at one point there even seem to be babies crying. Stream the delightful horror in the player on the left.
