Pioneer DJ Releases Fanzine Celebrating Three Decades of CDJ Turntable

'deckades' chronicles the evolution of DJing over the last 30 years

Beloved DJ brand, Pioneer, is celebrating 30 years of its original CDJ turntable with a limited-edition fanzine.

Released in 1994, the world’s first CDJ (which stands for Compact Disc Jockey) - the CDJ-500 - had a massive impact on club culture and led to the creation of today's popular Pioneer DJ.

Available both digitally and in print, the 'deckades' zine is packed with exclusive interviews with some of electronic music's biggest names, such as Fatboy Slim, Fabio & Grooverider and Anna Tur, as well as Kou Atsumi, the creator of the first CDJ.

Spanning three decades: 1994-2004, 2004-2014 and 2014-2024, the 42-page zine dives into the history and evolution of the CDJ.

The CDJ was first created as an alternative to the vinyl turntable and built on technology developed by Pioneer for car radios. As DJs transitioned from vinyl to CDs loaded with tunes, the CDJ grew in popularity. Mixing tracks in the club became much easier as a result, introducing techniques such as looping and beat matching as new possibilities.
