Kirin J. Callinan - Victoria M.

Indie rock used to know how to have a laugh – Pulp! Cornershop! Divine Comedy! – but somewhere along the way decided that a dour appearance was de rigueur. Hallelujah, then, for Australian singer/songwriter/madcap performer Kirin J. Callinan who blows a raspberry in the face of cool in this soap opera spoof video to Victoria M from his forthcoming debut album. Musically, there's a touch of The Cure's melodrama to the sweeping melody, while Callinan's voice remind me of the theatrical swoon of Future Islands frontman Samuel T Herring. It's a bold, ballsy love song – and this video offsets the earnestness with panache.
