This is Where I Recorded and Mixed the Album and All the Gear I Used...With edbl

Our new regular feature inspired by Four Tet's infamous Tweet asks artists about the places they make music and the equipment they used to do it.

Prolific beatmaker, producer, and multi-instrumentalist edbl (Ed Black) has dropped a sublime new project that gathers some of the best UK rappers around. As well as features from established acts such as Guvna B and Jelani Blackman, it also champions up-and-coming voices, including JayaHadADream, Meduulla, KinKai and Lazy Eyez.

The mixtape doesn't just stop at rappers, however. For '2010 Mixtape', edbl also called on the likes of soulful R&B vocalists IYAMAH and KeepVibesNear, as well as Japanese guitarist and composer, Kazuki Isogai.

Each track is seeped in edbl's signature laid-back production but carries the unique stamp of its featured artist. It's a luscious love letter to hip-hop, and marks the beginning of a new chapter for edbl, who has just sold out four shows in the space of four months, from London to Tokyo.

"All from my home studio in West Norwood, South London. Some tracks were made virtually (sending beats out to rappers and them sending bars back), some were made in sessions from my home studio."

"I live in a two-bedroom flat and my wife very kindly lets me use the second bedroom as a studio. Its a lovely space (I think!) with my relatively minimal home studio setup (I mostly use software as opposed to hardware) plenty of guitars, and a sofa for any artists who come through."

"Akai MPD 218 Sampler - I use this for chopping up samples & programming beats.

Fender Jazzmaster - this is my go to guitar for basically all guitar parts!

Squier Classic Vibe Player Series P Bass - for any bass parts.

Novation Launchkey 25 - I use this small keyboard for any keys/synth/string parts.

Audient iD14 interface - very solid interface, use for recording all guitars/bass/vocals.

Neumann TLM 102 - have used this microphone on basically all the vocals recorded for edbl (unless vocals are recorded remotely and sent across)."

"It’s a record firmly rooted in hip-hop with a tonne of incredibly talented UK rappers/singers featuring on it. My beats have always been inspired by hip-hop and I have worked on and released a few tracks with rappers over the years but I wanted to do a whole project that was all rap-based stuff.

The process was slightly different with this project with a lot of the tracks coming from beats being sent out and having bars sent back, which was a new one for me, but I enjoyed it still - just a slightly different approach! I love being in the room with artists and having that back and forth about ideas and you do miss that a bit with being sent bars, but its also super quick and I quite enjoy chipping away at beats on my own in any case."

"I don’t have a particular place in mind but one thing I really want to do soon, that I have seen other more established artists do, is to rent out a residential studio for 1-2 weeks, head there with a bunch of dope singers/rappers/instrumentalists, and just make music the whole time and stay there. I feel like thats how artists used to make records back in the day, I’d love to try it out. As much as I enjoy writing sessions there is always a definitive start and end time and I really like the thought of being somewhere where you can start when you want and go til whenever you want!"

"I’d love to get my hands on an AKAI MPC 3000 (or something similar) - Dilla used it, as well as a bunch of other great producers, its an iconic bit of kit in the hip-hop world, and its what my mixtape artwork was based on. Would love to see how it works/flows for making beats. Would also love to own a real Wurlitzer at some point."
