Fugees rapper Pras admits he was an FBI agent, fans react

Pras faces up to 22 years in prison...

Fugees member Pras Michel has revealed during his ongoing Federal Conspiracy Trial that he was a voluntary FBI informant.

The rapper told Rolling Stone back in March that he was facing charges for his alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme and association with a foreign country attempting to influence the U.S. government.

Pras is alleged by prosecutors to have donated $1.1 million to Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign, though the funds were actually given by Jho Low, a Malaysian fugitive wanted for his connection to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal. Acting as Low's "celebrity surrogate", Pras also contributed to Trump’s campaign through the Chinese financier.

The case is against Michel and Low, but the financier is not in court due to his fugitive status. If found guilty, Pras will face up to 22 years in prison.

The former Fugees member decided to testify in his own trial "after consulting with my attorneys and the universe", reported Mother Jones correspondent Dan Friedman on Twitter. As part of his defence, Pras revealed that he voluntarily met with FBI agents on several occasions regarding China's efforts to extradite a prominent dissident.

“I took it upon myself to report because I thought the FBI should know,” Michel said.

In a turn of events that would give even the best Netflix script writers a run for their money, fans online have reacted to the news that their favourite rapper was willingly feeding information to the government.

“When you consider Wyclef’s charity scams, Pras being a fed, Lauryn’s live performance grift, and John Forte’s dope dealing the Fugees camp is first team All- Infamous,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another user aired their disappointment by writing: “As someone who grew up on the Fugees. This pras news is just wild.”
