Music world celebrates Andrew Weatherall's life on what would be his 60th birthday
Today (April 6), on what would have been Andrew Weatherall's 60th birthday, the music world is saluting one of dance music's most legendary pioneers with a series of events across the country.
London's Fabric is hosting a special AW60 event tonight, bringing together a special cast of DJs and live acts assembled by Andrew's family and friends to take over all three of the venue's rooms.
"On April 6th 2023 Andrew Weatherall (my wonderful brother) would have been 60 years old," wrote Ian Weatherall in a note posted on Fabric's website. "To commemorate and celebrate this occasion myself, Lizzie and Andrew's closest friends and associates have collaborated to organise very special club nights to take place in London, Glasgow, Belfast and Todmorden.
"A great deal of money has been raised for charity in Andrew's name in the last three years and we all feel that it's now time to do our bit to support clubs and venues which month on month provide such a valuable cultural commodity. Andrew would have most definitely approved!"
Born in 1963, the DJ/producer/remixer rose to fame during the acid house era of the late ’80s, most notably working on Primal Scream’s ‘Screamadelica’, transforming it into an era-defining album, while also remixing tracks by artists from Björk to Manic Street Preachers.
An anti-establishment icon, Weatherall was uncompromising in his outlook, as well as being an engaging raconteur, a revered selector and mind-bending producer.
His brother Ian, adds: "All it remains to say is... thank you to everyone far and wide for their continued love and support and we look forward to seeing you - and celebrating with you - at these events."
